Happy International Hat Day: Bowlers and Fedoras and Cloches, Oh My! By Jill Blake
Hats have been a staple in fashion for centuries, with origins that date back to ancient Egypt around the year 3200 BC. Of course, hat styles have changed over time, but their purposes are pretty much the same: either functionality by providing protection from the sun and other elements, or merely serving as a fashion statement. Historically, hats also often represented an individual’s social standing, with different types of hats worn by certain social classes and for certain events or occupations, from ornate wide-brimmed hats, to high quality bowlers, to newsboy caps. Hats were also part of social convention, with men wearing hats when outside and women wearing anything from pillbox hats to fascinators to complete their outfits for church or other social functions. For International Hat day, here’s a list of some popular hat styles of the 20th century. Many of these hat styles can be found on the TCM shop.
Pork Pie Hat
Tumblr media
The pork pie hat dates back to the early-to-mid 1800s and was quite popular with men. The hat was often made of high-quality felt, but also could be made out of cotton or straw. The pork pie, or “stingy brim”, hat has distinctive features with a low crown and narrow brim. After the Civil War in the United States, the pork pie wasn’t as popular in men’s fashion. In the 1920s, silent film star and director Buster Keaton made the pork pie an integral part of his on-screen persona, helping popularize the hat once more. And in William Friedkin’s THE FRENCH CONNECTION (’71), Gene Hackman’s character, Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle, sports a pork pie hat.
Bowler Hat
Tumblr media
The Bowler hat originates from England and was created by Thomas and William Bowler in London during the mid-1800s. The Bowler is typically made of felt and has a rounded crown, narrow brim and is very durable. While it looks formal by today’s fashion standards, the bowler was considered a more informal hat for day-to-day wear and was mainly worn by middle and upper-class men from butlers and valets, to bankers and members of the aristocracy. Perhaps the most famous bowler in classic film belonged to Charlie Chaplin, who wore the trademark bowler for his iconic Little Tramp character in films such as MODERN TIMES (’36), CITY LIGHTS (’31), and THE KID (’21). Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy also famously wore bowler hats in many of their films, like the short ANOTHER FINE MESS (’30). Other examples include Jack Lemmon in Billy Wilder’s The Apartment (1960) and James Cagney during the “Harrigan” musical number in Michael Curtiz’s YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (’42).
Fedora
Tumblr media
The fedora is perhaps the most iconic hat in film history, particularly throughout the 1930s up through the 1950s. It’s typically made of high-quality felt, ranging from wool to cashmere to mink. The hat also usually has a wide, soft brim and a pinched crown that is indented at the top with some kind of ribbon running around the base of the crown. The fedora dates back to the 1890s and was originally considered a ladies’ hat. By the 1920s, the fedora was popularized by male members of the British Royal family and became a staple of men’s fashion. By the 1930s, the fedora was associated with gangsters and tough guys, as well as private detectives and plain clothes police officers. Almost every modern film from the 1930s through the 1950s features a fedora, including James Stewart’s Macaulay Connor in George Cukor’s THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (’40); Dick Powell’s Philip Marlowe in Edward Dmytryk’s film noir MURDER, MY SWEET (’44); and perhaps the fedora’s most famous wearer, Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine in Michael Curtiz’s CASABLANCA (’42). Ingrid Bergman also wore a variation of the fedora as Alicia Huberman in Alfred Hitchcock’s NOTORIOUS (’46).
Fascinator
Tumblr media
The fascinator is more headpiece than an actual hat, but has long been a staple of women’s fashion, particularly in Europe. Fascinators are typically decorative and are clipped or pinned into the hair. They can be made of a wide-range of materials, including silk, wool and feathers and can have netted veils. Fascinators are mainly worn in traditional or formal settings, such as during church services, weddings or funerals. There are countless examples of fascinators in classic film, but one of the most popular is the one that Rosalind Russell’s Sylvia Fowler wears with her Adrian-designed eyeball blouse in George Cukor’s THE WOMEN (’39).
Top Hat
Tumblr media
The top hat is one of the most recognizable hats in history. It is typically associated with formal dress dating back to the 1700s all the way up to the mid-1900s and is still worn today for certain social events. The top hat is tall, with a flat top and wide brim, and is usually made of silk, beaver fur or cloth. The hat was typically associated with wealth and prestige but eventually became accessible to a wide-range of social classes. Like the fedora, the top hat is featured in countless classic movies. Fred Astaire often wore one in his RKO musicals with Ginger Rogers, such as the appropriately named TOP HAT in 1935, directed by Mark Sandrich. Then there’s Fredric March, who always wears a top hat for a night out in Victorian-era London, whether he’s Dr. Henry Jekyll or his sinister alter-ego Mr. Hyde. But the top hat wasn’t limited to men—Marlene Dietrich famously wore one in her first American film, Josef von Sternberg’s MOROCCO (’30), as did Josephine Baker—both women pushing the boundaries of gender and redefining femininity.
Cloche Hat
Tumblr media
The cloche hat was one of the most popular hats for women in the early 20th century. The cloche dates back to 1908 and was designed by French fashion designer Caroline Reboux and named for its bell shape. The cloche was one of the most versatile hats in a woman’s wardrobe, worn with casual, everyday clothing, as well as fancier versions for evening wear. The cloche was also popular because it accentuated the shorter hairstyles that were becoming more popular at the time. Joan Crawford, Josephine Baker, Nancy Carroll, Norma Shearer and Louise Brooks all famously wore cloche hats. One of the most stunning examples is in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s technicolor masterpiece, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (’43) and worn by Deborah Kerr.
Hunter/Trapper Hat
Tumblr media
The hunter or trapper hat is sort of a variation on the deerstalker hat, typically associated with the literary character Sherlock Holmes. The trapper hat can be made of fur, leather, wool or flannel, and it has ear flaps that can be tied back. The hat is more function than style, providing warmth for a variety of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing or selling Christmas trees, like Rock Hudson’s Ron Kirby in Douglas Sirk’s ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (’55).
Bonus: Doris Day’s Many Hats
Tumblr media
Doris Day has rocked some hats in her day, particularly in her three films with Rock Hudson: PILLOW TALK (’59), LOVER COME BACK (’61), and SEND ME NO FLOWERS (’64). Pillbox hats. Cloche hats. Fur hats. Straw hats. Bubble hats. Bucket hats. Sun hats. And plenty of “I-don’t-know-what-that-is-but-it’s-fabulous” hats. In the late 1950s and 1960s, Day re-popularized many of the hat styles from the 1920s and 1930s, with a funky, mid-century twist. Doris wore them all and she looked absolutely fabulous.

Given all the talent on the roster, James probably won't have the ball enough to achieve that feat. Will LeBron average a triple-double sometime during the next six seasons? You can check out the results in the pie chart above.īelow, the TrueHoop Network has chimed in with their thoughts. We asked our 93 NBA panelists about LeBron's chances of averaging a triple-double.

The Associated Press contributed to this story. Anunoby made a 3-pointer with 6:57 left to get Toronto within two, but Miami scored the next seven points in a span of 59 seconds - a basket by Adebayo, a corner 3 from Max Strus and a driving layup by Caleb Martin for a 98-89 lead. Herro scored the last five points of the third quarter, then had the first bucket of the fourth to put Miami up by seven. There were 22 lead changes and 10 ties in the first 35 minutes, knotting the teams at 75 late in the third. I was kind of looking forward to seeing what that was going to be like." I think that you go in here and you always want to compete against the best players. "I guess I don't know how I feel about it. "I wanted to see him, obviously," Nurse said. Lowry missed the game for personal reasons. Lowry helped Toronto win the 2019 NBA title on his way to claiming to the unofficial moniker of GROAT - the Greatest Raptor Of All-Time. The game was expected to be the first time that Heat guard Kyle Lowry faced the Raptors since leaving Toronto for Miami this past season. It was a hell of an effort by our guys.'' "I didn't see anything that was changing. "We played as tough as we could,'' Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. The only other Raptor who got minutes was Justin Champagnie, who played 9:07 before leaving with a dislocated finger. Toronto basically used a six-man rotation, with those players getting between 34 and 42 minutes. Siakam scored off a turnover with 1:48 left to get Toronto within 99-96, but PJ Tucker made a corner 3 with 20 seconds left - off Butler's 10th assist - to help Miami hold on. Scottie Barnes scored 16 points, OG Anunoby scored 14 and former Heat forward Precious Achiuwa grabbed 15 rebounds for Toronto. VanVleet finished with 22 points for Toronto, which got 23 from Chris Boucher and 18 points and 10 rebounds from Pascal Siakam. "I'm just happy Jimmy got the triple-double and we got the win," said Adebayo, who ended up playing 32 minutes in his return and wore a wrap to protect his repaired thumb. "You can see his energy out there," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after his team pulled into a virtual tie with Chicago for first in the Eastern Conference.

Tyler Herro poured in 23 points, while Jimmy Butler earned a triple-double with 19 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds - the last of those coming as time was expiring, when Fred VanVleet's 3-point try missed. MIAMI - Miami Heat All-Star center Bam Adebayo scored 14 points and helped seal a 104-99 win over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night in his first game back after missing six weeks due to thumb surgery. THE BUBBLE FINALS: AN UNLIKELY MATCHUP
by Reuel Hermoso / 02 October 2020
Tumblr media
Two of the best all-around swingmen in the game - Heat star Jimmy Butler and Laker legend LeBron James - square off for all the marbles.  (Photo from slamonline.com)
The smoke has cleared from both the Eastern and Western Conferences, and expectedly, the Los Angeles Lakers cinched their conference finals and the first NBA finals berth.  But in the Eastern Conference, an unlikely winner emerged – the Miami Heat, who just defeated the fancied Boston Celtics.
Eric Spoelstra’s troops are now marching on to the NBA finals, that glorious Nirvana that they have not been to since 2014 when they had current Lakers superstar LeBron James.  They lost that series to the San Antonio Spurs, winning just a game (to the Spurs’ four) in the seven-game series, and James returned to his homestate and its team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the following year, and even conspired with celebrated backcourt wizard Kyrie Irving to give Cleveland its first NBA championship in 2016.  The Heat last won the NBA crown in 2013.  That makes for a really hungry team longing to feast on a championship glory.
But if a seven-year fast looks bad, the Lakers are in a worse famine, last appearing – and winning – the NBA finals in 2010, when the late great Kobe Bryant was still their unquestioned leader.  Acquiring James’s services after he left the Cavs was a watershed event for the Lakers in their quest to finally end that 10-year title drought.  And signing up the highly-prized former New Orleans Pelicans power forward-center Anthony Davis was the last key to unlock the display chest holding the Larry O’Brien trophy for the Lakers to finally take home.
Getting other pieces like former Houston Rockets big man Dwight Howard and young gunners Kentavius Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso to pace the backcourt, as well as versatile wingmen like the young Kyle Kuzma and the more experienced Markieff Morris to beef up the frontline, helped to complete this powerful Laker roster. Coach Frank Vogel, acquired just last year, has done some pretty admirable work in that short period, piloting the Lakers to a 52-19 win-loss card in just his first season – the best record in the Western Conference and the third-best in the entire league.  This is a team that was put together precisely to restore the Lakers’ lost glory, and with this ticket to the Big Dance, they’re just four wins away from accomplishing that.
The Heat, however, are looking to spoil the Lakers’ date with destiny, believing that they have their own destiny to meet – and have proven they will not be denied that other finals slot.  The face of the Heat today, Jimmy Butler, is himself a story that mirrors the struggles of his team to get back its own former glory.  Thrown out of the house by his mother at the age of 13, Butler spent the following year hopping from house to house, living with friends who would take him in for a day, a week, or more if he was lucky.  Finally, a friend’s family decided to adopt him.
They sent him to school, and later saw him off to college to fulfill his dreams of playing varsity basketball.  Initially, he played for Tyler College in his home state of Texas, and was later offered an academic scholarship at Marquette, a perennial March Madness contender in the US NCAA, for which former Heat superstar Dwyane Wade also played.  In his junior year, Butler helped the Golden Eagles to an 11-7 win-loss card that season in the NCAA’s Big East Conference and a fifth consecutive March Madness appearance.
In the NBA, Butler became a journeyman of sorts, suiting up for the Chicago Bulls, which drafted him in 2011.  Although he played well in his long stint with the Bulls – at one point breaking Michael Jordan’s team record for most points in a half in a game they won against the Toronto Raptors on January 3, 2016 –Butler was plagued by injuries.  In 2017, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the following year he was again traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.  Finally, in a sign-and-trade deal, the guy famously known as “Jimmy Buckets” “moved (his) talent to South Beach,” in the famous words of James himself when he first left the Cavs in 2010 to join the Heat.
With all this moving and seeming lack of rootedness even from his early adolescence, any lesser man would probably have called it quits.  Certainly not Butler though.  He couldn’t care less how people felt about him, whether they felt pity on him or hated his guts.  As sportswriter Garth Johnson put it in fansided.com: “A lot of guys in the league view basketball as a way to a lifestyle.  Jimmy Butler viewed basketball as a way to a life.  On his own since 13 in a small Texas town outside Houston, Butler had more to worry about than rubbing some people the wrong way.”  Read more about it in https://fansided.com/2020/02/29/jimmy-butler-heat-sledgehammer-greatness/.
To cut to the chase, this Heat squad today is now Butler’s team – his and his alone.  Sure, he had his chances to carve out a leadership position with the Bulls, but that wasn’t meant to be.  He wasn’t exactly welcomed in Minnesota, and some like Johnson even think Butler broke the Timberwolves apart during his stint there.  But even then, as Johnson observes, “in his one season there they made their first playoff appearance in 14 years.”  The Timberwolves even had their first winning season in 13 years and had a win-loss card of 38-24 with Butler while going 9-11 without him.  They even fell from third in the West when he hurt his knee, to eighth going into the playoffs.
“You don’t have to be a stat geek to see how they are (now) faring without him,” Johnson argues.
More importantly, though, it’s what the Heat braintrust decided to do to get those other pieces they needed to put together a team that’s primed to surprise the NBA by achieving what it has in so short a time.  Butler is their crowning recruitment achievement in the offseason, but consider as well coach Spo’s starting five to give you an idea of this team’s ability to continue perplexing the league and its fans.
As civil engineer and casual basketball pundit Ramby Nolido observed, they first cornered Kentucky Wildcat sniper Tyler Herro – who now comes off the bench as a deadly sixth man – ahead of their Eastern Conference finals opponents, the Celtics, who were hoping the Heat would overlook him before making Herro the 13th overall draft pick, depriving the Celtics of a chance to get him in the next draft slot at 14th.  Then they acquired former Golden State Warriors small forward Andre Iguodala and two former Celtics – Jae Crowder and Kelly Olynyk – with Crowder playing with an ax to grind against his former team in the just-concluded Eastern Conference finals.  Heat management then brought up deadshot Duncan Robinson from their G-League team to light things up from rainbow country.
“That’s four steps in the season that they got things right,” says Nolido.  And from their previous roster, they kept Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic, a deadly frontline-backcourt tandem on both ends of the floor.
The question thus inevitably surfaces: Who will win the NBA title – the first held in a “bubble” in its long history?  Who will get to take the Larry O’Brien trophy out of the bubble?
Clearly, the advantage is in LA’s favor.  The combined firepower alone of James and Davis in the 2019-20 season is a whopping 51.5 points per game on the average.  The supporting cast is just as potent, with inside-outside threats Kuzma and Caruso combining with Davis, who has decent three-point shooting numbers and can take the ball inside with his vaunted size and athleticism.  Caldwell-Pope is also another recognized perimeter threat, but is a solid slasher as well.  Morris, JaVale McGee, and even Howard are also known to be able to hit it from the perimeter, although that isn’t their strong suit.
What is their strong suit – and that of the rest of the Lakers – is their astounding inside scoring and, on the defensive end, their protection of the shaded lane.  Indeed, LA has dominated the paint throughout much of the season, and obviously the Lakers will continue to use their size and length to their fullest advantage.  Because despite the timely three-point bombs that guys like Kuzma, Caruso, Caldwell-Pope, and even the superstars James and Davis have unleashed with deadly accuracy during the playoffs, the Lakers are not exactly an outside scoring juggernaut, averaging just 34.9 percent from trifecta range (averaging home and road three-point shooting percentages prior to the lockdown, according to https://www.nba.com/lakers/stats/team).  In the bubble, that percentage has dropped even lower to 30.6 percent in July and 30.2 percent in August.
Tumblr media
 Source: https://www.nba.com/article/2020/09/28/2020-playoffs-numbers-preview-lakers-heat-finals
In contrast, the Lakers own the low post.  They are monsters in the restricted area, scoring a gargantuan 88 points underneath the basket compared to the Heat’s 74.  Here’s the thing though – elsewhere in the paint, Miami outscores LA but not by much.  Total points in the shaded area will expectedly go the way of the Lakers.  This accounts for many of their wins, since inside points are higher-percentage shots compared to perimeter attempts.
Still, the numbers for outside points seem to be going the way of the Lakers.  Total mid-rangers and three-balls have them up 26 points over the Heat.  But where the boys from South Beach have the upper hand scoring-wise is from the free-throw line.  There, they outscore the Hollywood boys by a whopping 18 markers.  They also run the break better, beating LA in transition by nine points – both crucial advantages in the clutch.  Where the Lakers are better off with the game on the line is in second-chance points, where they lord it over the Heat by 20 points.
Indeed, offense and offensive efficiency will spell the difference for both teams, despite their respective claims to being defensive juggernauts.  As John Schuhmann of nba.com wrote: “Both teams have had success on both ends of the floor, but offense was the story in the conference finals. The Lakers and Denver Nuggets combined to score 115.3 points per 100 possessions, while the Heat and Boston Celtics combined to score 114.1.  Those were the third- and fourth-most efficient series of the 14 we've seen thus far.”
We should thus expect that offense will remain the most compelling reason for their respective coaching staffs to continue as that is what has brought them both this far.
Or is it?  Perhaps both teams will be wise to revisit their defensive narrative and give it more of the importance it truly deserves.  As University of Alabama legendary football coach Bear Bryant (no relation to Kobe) famously said (and which Ateneo sniper Jai Reyes repeated after his Blue Eagles successfully wrested the UAAP men’s basketball title from the La Salle Green Archers in 2008): “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships!”
The team with the better defensive strategy will take the series – and the championship.  As Schuhmann of nba.com correctly observes: “To win their 17th championship, the Lakers will have to keep up with the Heat's ball and player movement.  To win their fourth, the Heat will have to protect the rim.  In both cases, it's much easier said than done.”  (As an aside, as a Celtics fan, I just want to say that this is one reason why I’m rooting for the Heat; it’s not just because of our natural aversion to the Purple-and-Gold but also because Boston diehards want to keep that record of most number of NBA titles ever.  Touché!)
Each game, each quarter, maybe even each possession, will boil down to how the individual and roster matchups will fare between these two protagonists.  Key here will be the substitution patterns of Messrs. Vogel and Spoelstra, and how they can effectively use the chess pieces they each have.
Coach Vogel has largely stuck with his starting five of James as point forward, Davis at the forward spot, Caldwell-Pope as swingman, JaVale McGee at center, and Danny Green as shooting guard, while coach Spo has from time to time experimented in his backcourt lineup, but with schoolboy charm Duncan Robinson and Dragic in the perimeter, Adebayo at center, and Butler and Dragic in the wings as the mainstays.  He has a potent bench, with boy wonder Herro as his sixth man and Crowder at the forward spots (the latter’s versatility allows him to play both the small and power positions), with both players having reliable deep-three shots that can spread the Laker defense to its limits.  It is a fast lineup, well, at least faster than that of the Lakers, and should leverage on that speed to run the floor before the Lakers’ transition defense can react.
What’s also interesting and has been fun to watch thus far is the Butler-Adebayo tandem.  Schuhmann at nba.com notes that, when the two are on the floor together, the Heat outscore their opponents by 10.6 points more per 100 possessions.  But they’ve been outscored by their opponents by 3.0 points per 100 possessions in 103 minutes with just Adebayo without Butler on the floor, and by 14.4 points per 100 possessions in 99 minutes of play with just Butler without Adebayo.  It would seem that, if coach Spo had to keep either one on the bench longer, it would have to be Butler.
Indeed, as Schuhmann demonstrates, “the Heat have scored 16.9 more points per 100 possessions with Bam Adebayo on the floor (116.1) than they have with him off the floor (99.2).  That's the fourth-biggest on-off offense rating differential among 73 players who've played at least 200 total minutes in the postseason.”
Adebayo clearly has proven himself to have a greater impact on the game for the Heat, and the last game against Boston in the Eastern Conference finals showed the value he brings to the table.  Though a center, Adebayo moves like a power forward with the way he screens and passes (especially his interior passing), and even his turnaround jumper in the key is cash.  And that's how he could wreak havoc on the Lakers' post defenders like Howard and McGee – maybe even Davis as a rim defender.
On the offensive end, those guys may also have fits trying to score against him in the post, Adebayo being the most athletic big on the Heat roster, with more than ample length and heft.  Of course, we can’t forget Iguodala, who brings with him championship experience from Golden State, having been with the Warriors in all their three NBA championships thus far in the 21st century (2015, 2017 and 2018).  It will be remembered that in the 2015 title series, Iguodala fashioned a defensive masterpiece on James, limiting the latter to 38.1 percent field-goal shooting compared to 44 percent when Iguodala was on the bench.  Both Iguodala and James are in their mid-30s, and have had their fair share of NBA glory.  For sure, James will look at settling an old score, while Iguodala will look at putting the cuffs on The King once again via his tried-and-tested lockdown D that made James bleed for every point, giving the Warriors a superior 3-1 finals win-loss card in all their NBA finals showdowns that only saw a failure in 2016.
So who will be the Bubble Champions of the NBA?  The numbers coming out of the Las Vegas bookies give the clear advantage to the Lakers, if only for the James-Davis pairing.  But as many hoops pundits have seen through decades of watching this game, stranger things have happened in basketball.  Just last August, the Milwaukee Bucks were the indubitable favorite to win the NBA crown among the bookies and oddsmakers.  Everyone and his mother now know Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe, the Lopez twins and company are now vacationing wherever.
Actually, folks were looking at a Bucks-Lakers finals.  And I thought we’d be having a revival of the famous Celtics-Lakers rivalry of the ages.
The bottomline: sit back, relax.  Or stand up, and bite your nails.  Either way, this will be a great series.  James up against his old team.  Or Heat president Pat Riley up against the old team that he coached.  No plot could have been better contrived.

Nobody can stop the Thunder’s three-guard lineup
Tumblr media
The Thunder’s three point guard attack has been the most effective lineup in the NBA.
The story behind the Thunder’s potent three point guard lineup.
The seeds of this NBA season’s most effective, fun, and convention-bucking trio were planted in July, when Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan quickly realized three of his five best players were point guards: Chris Paul, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Dennis Schroder.
Donovan initially read the positional overlap as an extremely convenient dilemma. He fantasized about their compatibility and all the different ways their offense could swarm. But none of it would be possible unless all three embraced selflessness in an environment that, in the aftermath of Paul George’s trade request, was ostensibly defined by an every man for himself ethos.
“I gave a lot of thought in the summer to playing those three guys together,” Donovan told SB Nation. “I didn’t know how it would work because as a coach you have a vision of how you want them to play, but you also, inside that vision, have to make sure that all three of them are playing to their strengths.”
Even though the very idea of a position is increasingly antiquated in today’s NBA, selling those who expect to orchestrate offense with the ball in their hands on minutes where that might not be the case wouldn’t be easy. Before training camp, all three sat with Donovan to discuss the benefits of sacrifice, ball and man movement, and the myriad ways they can make life easier for each other when all are on the floor, particularly in crunch time.
“We had to come on the same page,” Schroder told SB Nation. “We had to talk to each other.”
In training camp, Donovan remembers an instantaneous chemistry. Paul, Schroder, and Gilgeous-Alexander had an immediate desire to get each other involved. They were constantly aware of who was hot, or had the best matchup.
“I saw an incredible unselfishness by all of them, to make sure that they all knew from each other: ‘I don’t have to have the ball all the time. We can all play together,’” Donovan said.
Some basketball teams never discover their best self. They can’t find the right offensive system, rotation, or defensive strategy. For any of a million different reasons. In an alternate universe, Oklahoma City could’ve easily seen their three point guards as an unplayable hindrance. Instead — at 21-16, five games ahead of the eight seed and four games back of the two seed — they might be the NBA’s most potent triumvirate. There are 536 three-man lineup combinations that have logged at least 200 minutes this season. Paul, Schroder, and Gilgeous-Alexander lead all in net rating, outscoring opponents by 26.7 points per 100 possessions, with an offensive and defensive rating that would rank first by a country mile.
As a group of pragmatic improvisers that realize mismatches created by their own speed, gravity, and rhythmic perception will inevitably appear on every possession, they’ve helped turn Oklahoma City into a basketball intelligencia.
They’ve had success regardless of who else is on the court, but when paired with Danilo Gallinari and Steven Adams there may not be a team in the entire league that can slow them down. Think about it: how many rosters have three players who can competently cover Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander, or Schroder, and what are the chances that at least one won’t muck up their own crunch-time offense?
“Most teams have one or two really good defenders,” Gilgeous-Alexander told SB Nation. “It’s rare you find a team with three really good defenders. It’s hard for them to guard all three of us at the same time. It’s something I’ve adjusted to and it’ll make me better in the long run.”
Gilgeous-Alexander, Paul, and Schroder are all in different stages of their careers, but each one is having an incredible individual season without stepping on another’s toes. They can run effective pick-and-rolls and score at all three levels, but do it in their own way, at their own speed. Schroder is blurry, Paul is under control, and Gilgeous-Alexander exists somewhere in-between, an off-balance, 6’5 wunderkind whose unpredictability meshes neatly with the other two.
Matching up against them as a set defense is hard enough, but trying to get organized in transition is almost impossible. Look what happens when Patrick Patterson and Landry Shamet fail to match up correctly in the crunch-time play below:
youtube
Or, how the Charlotte Hornets think their transition defense is perfect ... until Gilgeous-Alexander notices that Miles Bridges has picked Paul up:
youtube
A 24-second possession is an eternity for defenses trying to keep three resourceful, creative ball handlers from turning panic into opportunity. Plays don’t break, they evolve.
youtube
youtube
When all three share the floor Oklahoma City’s effective field goal percentage is 58.7 percent, which is nearly three percent better than the first-place Milwaukee Bucks. But what makes them so fascinating is how frequently they operate from the mid-range, where more shots are launched than at the rim or behind the three-point line.
That’s mostly thanks to Paul’s galaxy brain, puppeteering pick-and-roll coverages with elite sense, anticipation, and a pull-up jumper that basically never misfires. At 34 years old and the heartbeat of these units, he’s somehow still able to rollerskate in and around defenses to get a bucket whenever he wants one, and is currently drilling 66.2 percent of his pull-up twos in the fourth quarter. (Nobody has attempted more of them this season.) He’s also scored 103 points in the clutch, which is 20 more than any other player.
youtube
“Dennis and all us, we have a joke,” Paul said. “When we get to the elbow we yell ‘layup’ because that’s our version of a layup.”
After a two-year sabbatical in Houston, where he conducted fewer pick-and-rolls and wasn’t earmarked to marshal the offense how he normally would, Paul is once more coasting on the tried-and-true Point God formula that made him a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Right now, 49.3 percent of his possessions end as a pick-and-roll ball-handler. On the Rockets it was 36.4 percent.
The timing couldn’t be better, as more and more teams feel incentivized to play the percentages. Long twos are welcome with a door mat, and Paul is more than happy to walk all over it.
youtube
youtube
When the defense hugs up to take his shot away, that’s when everybody else’s instincts are able to shine:

Paul has been essential, an actor and director at the very same time. But the genius behind OKC’s sets whenever they go small is how interchangeable the roles are. Gilgeous-Alexander and Schroder average more pick-and-roll possessions than Harden, Jimmy Butler, and LeBron James; Schroder is making 52 percent of his long twos and Gilgeous-Alexander is their leading scorer. Everybody cuts. Everybody drifts. Everybody understands timing and angles and where to be, with or without the ball.
“We’ve got elite point guards who can go and make decisions, so it’s kind of unique,” Schroder told SB Nation. “But I like it. It’s really, really hard to guard.”
Offense isn’t a problem, and, unlike most three-guard lineups that tend to deflate on the other end, neither is defense. Steven Adams helps as a back-line defender who gobbles up rebounds, but the three guards have also done an admirable job on their own assignments. When asked why these lineups have had so much success this season, defense is all Paul wanted to talk about.
“We’re so versatile in that we can put all different types of defenders on you. Shai finally learned how to defend the post, it only took him maybe 25 games,” he said, smiling. “But me and Dennis mix it up too. Dennis is a pest, picking up 94 feet.”
They allow 97.3 points per 100 possessions. The gap between that number and the first-place Milwaukee Bucks is also what stands between the Bucks and the 14th-ranked Brooklyn Nets. But their margin for error is probably more narrow than it would otherwise be. Adams is solid, but also stretched thin in certain matchups. Look at this play against Denver, where Gilgeous-Alexander fails to rotate off the weak-side corner, causing OKC’s center to crash back and then race out to contest Nikola Jokic’s three.
youtube
This is what that same play looks like when the Thunder switch. In both, Paul can be seen telling his 21-year-old teammate where to be.
youtube
Some of the Thunder’s success with this lineup is due to opponents only hitting 28.5 percent of their threes, and teams that can play small with more muscle on the wing may be a problem going forward. But thanks to how well OKC takes care of the ball, and the frequency with which why get to the free-throw line, they’re able to get back on defense and set up in the half-court.
In general, Donovan is much less concerned with any size-related disadvantage than a desire to keep at least two of his point guards on the floor at all times. When two of the three are on the bench it’s been a disaster.
Since Thanksgiving, lineups featuring Paul, Schroder, and Gilgeous-Alexander have averaged 7.7 minutes per game. Before it, they only tallied 4.9. (The Thunder were 7-11 before Thanksgiving, and have been a Western-Conference-best 15-5 since.) They close just about every first half and fourth quarter with those three guards — who, by the way, rank second, third, and fourth in clutch plus/minus — but are trying to figure out ways to utilize them in the third quarter, too.
“For Chris he’s generally coming off like about six minutes and Dennis is coming in playing with Shai so you have those guys and you kind of get through the first quarter and then you get into the second quarter and then you can kind of get them all in there to close,” Donovan said. “But you also have to look at how long a guy has been on the floor, how long has he been playing, is he well rested, and you’re trying to keep two of the three on the floor at all times.”
It’s the natural balancing act that comes with any personnel group this quirky. Over a month ago, I cast doubt about their three-guard lineup in my notebook, referring to the experience of watching them as a tightrope walk that made me lean forward in my seat, anticipating either a tragic fall or that first triumphant step on the other side. As great as they’ve been, the inherent volatility that’s tied to lineups this slight justified a bit of skepticism, and for some it still might. What they mean, from a big-picture sense, is also debatable. Can this work in the playoffs (which the Thunder are almost guaranteed to make)? Does it merit Sam Presti making a win-now trade before the deadline?
But until they stumble, the plucky Thunder and their three point guards remain a puzzle the rest of the NBA has yet to figure out. There might not be a more delightful story in the entire league.

Dunc'd on Podcast suggest possible landing spots for Bulls' Jabari Parker
Dunc'd on Podcast suggest possible landing spots for Bulls' Jabari Parker originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com
On Wednesday's episode of the Dunc'd on Podcast, hosts Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux wento over the current state of the Bulls and discussed potential teams that could be interested in Jabari Parker.
Duncan and Leroux are two of the more reasonable basketball minds, and they quickly came to the conclusion that it would be tough to find a team that necessarily needs Parker. But they nonetheless went through a couple of teams that could possibly make good use of the 23-year old forward.
Orlando Magic:
Duncan and Leroux weren't that into the idea of Parker on Orlando but acknowledged that they certainly could use some help in the scoring department.
The Magic are currently 26th in the league in PPG (103.5) but are hovering around a .500 record due to their strong defense and slow pace of the play-the same style of play that has improved the Bulls D while torpedoing their offensive efficiency.
But the Magic do have skilled offensive players like DJ Augustin, Terrence Ross and Nikola Vucevic. All three players have managed to be efficient scorers this season, but only Vucevic and Ross have been able to do it while also shouldering a big offensive workload. Outside of Ross, Jonathon Simmons is the only other Magic bench player who carries a decent usage rate. Parker-for all of his shortcomings-offers more size and upside than Simmons.
On top of that, the Magic are one of the more pass-happy teams in the league, averaging just over 25 assists per game. It would be a solid team to compensate for Parker's occasional penchant to develop tunnel vision when looking to score.
Parker's terrible assist-to-turnover ratio wouldn't hurt Orlando too much either, as they currently sit inside the top 10 in team AST/TO ratio.
Atlanta Hawks:
The Hawks are very short on quality forwards. And that is exactly what Leroux stated when trying to picture Parker on the Hawks:
"[Atlanta] needs depth basically everywhere on the forward line, especially with Taurean Prince out."
At full strength they place John Collins-a very solid young talent-at the four next to Dewayne Dedmon or Alex Len, with the latter being the much stronger tandem. But with Atlanta rebuilding at the moment, having functional lineups is much more important than having effective ones. And that is where Parker helps them.
According to Basketball-Reference play-by-play information, 41-year old Vince Carter is playing 61 percent of his minutes at power forward. So it is no shocker that he is posting one of the five worst individual defensive ratings on the team.
After Collins and Carter, rookie Omari Spellman and Taurean Prince play the most minutes at PF. Spellman is more of a center and Prince is good enough at guarding small forwards and wings to make it unnecessary for him to play the PF.
Slotting Parker into their rotation allows all the aforementioned players to return to their natural positions more often. At his natural PF position, Parker would be free to slide into a role as a (moderately) high usage player. Trae Young, Collins and Jeremy Lin could actually form quite a potent offensive combination with despite how bad that lineup would be.
But being bad at defense is another key to Parker's possible success with Atlanta. Out of all the likely NBA lottery teams, perhaps only the Hawks, Knicks and Cavaliers had less expectations than the Bulls, who some (not many) pegged as a possible dark-horse No. 8 seed in the playoffs.
New Orleans Pelicans:
The Pelicans are in the same situation as the Bulls in terms of needing a quality small forward and struggling to attract star free agents. Parker doesn't help with either of those issues and that is why Duncan suggested he could essentially be a nice depth piece for New Orleans, stating that Parker could help just by being on their roster as "a forward for when [Julius] Randle and [Nikola] Mirotic are inevitably hurt.
Though Pelicans general manager Dell Demps has had his fair share of misses, it is unlikely he would be looking to back up his oft-injured forwards with another injury-prone player. But if the New Orleans front office truly thinks Parker can improve from his current level of play, it would be worth it to part ways with Solomon Hill and salary filler for Parker. Whatever draft compensation Chicago wants would make or break this deal.
Story continues
But with fellow Chicago-native Anthony Davis drawing tons of attention on his dives to the rim, it isn't impossible to imagine a world in which Parker scores effectively as a pick-and-roll ball-handler with Jrue Holiday providing some floor spacing.
Philadelphia 76ers:
We'll keep this one short. Nate Duncan had perhaps the best line of the episode when he stated flatly "they don't need more usage on this team."
But while the Sixers certainly don't need more player who want the ball in their hands, Duncan himself brought up the fact that they need more quality players in general. Parker has glaring holes in his game but that doesn't mean he couldn't be good in a complementary role.
After the recently acquired Jimmy Butler and Wilson Chandler, the Sixers don't have many players who can hold down the forward spots. Ben Simmons can obviously play in the frontcourt in a pinch, but the point of Simmons' uniqueness is that you can keep him at the one and surround him with big, two-way guards and forwards.
So Parker would actually fill somewhat of a need for the Sixers. Again, for all of his shortcomings, I don't think anyone is going to strongly argue that Mike Muscala is clearly a better backup option at power forward than Parker. Muscala fits better because he is a great 3-point shooter, whereas Parker would cramp the floor spacing in Philly. But Muscala is a terrible rebounder for his position, averaging 4 rebounds per game compared to Parker's 6 boards a game, which actually leads the rebound-deficient Bulls.
And in a best case scenario where Parker is engaged on defense, he and Simmons could have some great success as a duo in transition.
They both possess the coveted "grab-and-go" ability that allows them to turn quick shots by an opponent into an easy bucket. Parker was around the 60th percentile as a transition scorer in his last year in Milwaukee (which is good) but has fallen off this year on an injury-riddled Bulls team.
A big reason for Parker's transition offense falling off is his high turnover rate. But the hope would be that Simmons-who also turns the ball over a lot-Butler and Embiid would have the ball in their hands so much that Parker's turnovers would decrease dramatically.
As far as the framework for this deal? Markelle Fultz, Muscala and Jonah Bolden would be enough to make the trade work. This trade wouldn't really weaken the Sixers in any way on the court. And off the court, Parker's expiring deal would be interesting for a Sixers team that will be trying to re-sign Butler while adding depth around the margins.

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder and Chris Paul are having trade deal troubles
Chris Paul was finally traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder after a week the free agency ended. While the Houston Rockets are now happy that Paul is not a trouble for them anymore, the same can’t be said for the Thunder. The plan was to exchange Russel Westbrook and Paul and then trade out the later to some other team.
But even after trying so much, the Oklahoma City team can’t find a single buyer who wants Chris Paul. The reasons involved are his old age, poor performance and attitude problems with other players (James Harden feud). It means that the Thunder have no other option, but to start the NBA season with Paul/
Chris Paul and Oklahoma City Thunder
The earlier report said that the Oklahoma City Thunder is in talks with other NBA teams for a Chris Paul trade. There were reports that Miami Heat who wanted Russel Westbrook might be interested in Paul too, as they want a star player to pair up with Jimmy Butler. But no such deal came to the final stages, and now the Thunder will have to continue the next season with Paul in their team.
Story filed to ESPN: Oklahoma City’s discussions to move nine-time All-Star guard Chris Paul onto a new destination are parked and an increasing expectation exists that he will start the season with the Thunder.

— Biscayne Buckets (@ThePunishers85) July 15, 2019
It is not like Chris will be playing for the first team in the Oklahoma City, he has done it before too. When he was a rookie player, Paul shifted from New Orleans to the Oklahoma City temporarily due to the hurricane Katrina. As per the latest reports, both Paul and Thunder have concluded that a season together will be beneficial for everyone.
One year Wait for a Deal
The Oklahoma City Thunder team will let Chris Paul play in the next season for several other reasons too. With Paul George and Russel Westbrook out of the team, they have no experienced player. The team of Thunder currently have 8 future draft picks, but until new players are brought, Paul is needed in the team.
youtube
Also, it won’t do good to anyone if Paul is just sitting idle on the bench. If Chris Paul plays for the Thunder team and performs well, then the remaining NBA teams might become interested in a deal. Everyone is waiting for December 15, after which the free agents signed will become eligible for a new trade deal.

Michael Porter Jr. was worth the wait
Tumblr media
This is the Michael Porter Jr. the Denver Nuggets were waiting for.
This is the Michael Porter Jr. we’ve been waiting for.
There was a time when it felt like the basketball world was meant to orbit around Michael Porter Jr. As a high school player, Porter’s talent was so apparent it caused entire college basketball programs to bend to his whims. Washington once hired his father away from Missouri to secure his commitment on the recruiting trail. After the Huskies’ coaching staff was replaced following a disappointing year with No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Markelle Fultz, Mizzou re-hired Porter Sr., who brought his son with him.
At the time, Porter Jr. felt like a generational prospect. A 6’10 forward with a sweet shooting stroke and the type of boundless athleticism that landed him his first SportsCenter appearance as a high school sophomore, Porter had the pedigree to match his raw talent. He dominated Nike’s EYBL circuit posting huge and efficient scoring numbers while playing alongside Trae Young on Mokan Elite. He was a staple of USA Basketball’s youth program and helped bring back a gold medal at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. There were Kevin Durant comparisons and early hype he could be the No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick (we originally had him at No. 2 behind only Luka Doncic).
Everything fell apart in the first two minutes of Porter’s time at Mizzou. He exited the season opener with a back injury that eventually led to microdiscectomy surgery of his L3-L4 spinal discs. Porter fought his way back on the court to play in the Tigers’ NCAA tournament game, but it was clear he wasn’t the same player. Concerns over the injury didn’t just cost him his entire college career, it also pushed him down the board to No. 14 in the draft.
The Denver Nuggets were in prime position to take a chance on him. After essentially giving Porter a redshirt season following a second back surgery after the draft, Denver is finally starting to see the player it once appeared he was destined to become.
Porter scored a career-high 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting in the Nuggets’ 124-116 road win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night. Healthy for the first time in years, the vision of what Porter was always supposed to be has started to come into focus.
youtube
The Nuggets had nothing to lose by taking a draft-day flier on Porter with the last pick in the lottery. He was lucky to land with a winning organization that took a patient approach prioritizing his health. After scoring 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting against the Sacramento Kings last week in his first career start, it appears Porter is all the way back to the player he was hyped to be as a recruit.
This is one of the feel-good stories of the year in the NBA. It’s also a tremendous boost for the Nuggets in both the short- and long-term that should have the rest of the Western Conference terrified at where this relationship could go from here.
Porter is a natural-born scorer
Porter’s game has always been about getting buckets. He grew up modeling his game after Durant and was one of the few young players who actually had the skill set to do it. At 6’10, Porter was raised on the perimeter, honing his jump shot first and his ball handling second during a time when he could have dominated on size alone. The work he put in at a young age was always with an eye on how his game would translate to the highest levels. Now it’s happening.
Just look at how much separation Porter caused on this step-back. He turned a mid-range jumper into a corner three with exactly one step.
That MPJ step-back pic.twitter.com/Qa2n27EDnH
— Dime (@DimeUPROXX) January 3, 2020
Porter’s shooting stroke has always been a focal point in his skill set, but he doesn’t solely rely on it. Rather, his shot is used to keep defenses honest against his ability to attack the rim. He beat the Pacers to the basket time and again Thursday, burning close-outs for acrobatic layups at the rim, finishes off cuts, scoring in transition, and even putting small defenders in the post.
This shot chart is a work of art in the modern NBA:

— Ryan Blackburn (@NBABlackburn) January 3, 2020
In his last three games, Porter is 22-of-28 from the field. This has always been a young player with remarkable touch from all three levels. He’s starting to show it now against the best players in the world.
The Nuggets just added another deadly weapon
Just look at how happy Porter’s Denver teammates were after the win over Indiana. They know he’s been waiting for this moment for a long time:
Congrats on the career night, Michael Porter Jr.! pic.twitter.com/9afPIDF5hu
— Nuggets Nation (@NuggetsNationCP) January 3, 2020
The Nuggets only had the opportunity to draft Porter after losing to Jimmy Butler and the Minnesota Timberwolves on the final day of the 2017-18 season. The Wolves earned the No. 8 seed with the victory and Denver got the last pick in the lottery. With a promising young core led by Nikola Jokic already in place, Denver was in a position to be patient with Porter and not rest the hopes and dreams of the franchise on his injured back. Instead, he could get healthy and contribute at his own pace without worrying about needing to be the organization’s one great hope.
Denver is again near the top of the Western Conference — currently in the No. 2 seed at 24-10 — as Porter begins his journey to becoming a regular contributor. Head coach Mike Malone hasn’t just handed him minutes, he’s had to work for every opportunity this season. Porter hasn’t had consistent playing time this season, but he gets closer to earning it with every flash of brilliance.
There is still plenty to work on. He isn’t much of a playmaker for his teammates yet, with only 11 assists in 257 minutes this year. He also will need to get tougher defensively. He’s only had three steals and eight blocks thus far. While he’s far from a finished product, Porter can already stockpile points as a scorer, and that should have Nuggets fans ecstatic.
It looks like everything worked out perfectly for both the player and the organization, given the situation. The Nuggets were in a rare position to let Porter take all the time he needed to get back to being himself. Porter never had to worry about being the franchise savior he once felt destined to be and instead can simply be a valuable contributor to a winning team.
At long last, the Michael Porter Jr. we were always promised might finally be here. Still only 21 years old, we can’t wait to see where his story takes him from here.
